Adobe v Pixelmator ? no contest

Adobe Photoshop Elements v Pixelmator? no contest

Hi All,

Thought it was about time I hit the keyboard again  :0)

Spurred on by Bart’s adventures with Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac (over at www.bartb.ie) and his comparisons on Allison Sheridan’s Nosillacast Podcast, I thought I’d take a look at Pixelmator.

It seemed to be the other main player in the ‘Photoshop lite’ category, and I heard Bart mention the Magic Words ‘Layer Mask’ – my Geek Radar Pinged!

Now, I don’t do a whole lot of photography tweaking, but in the ‘Day Job’ of building web sites, the ability to blend 2 or 3 pictures or images comes in very handy indeed. I had found a work around for PSE 6.0 for Mac – my current App for picture editing – but it has been a little clunky & not as smooth as I remember it of Photoshop 6 for PC (yes, that’s the last time I used it!)

So off to the Pixelmator site I went & downloaded the trial – about 10 minutes later I was converted!

Pixelmator handles Layer Masks as smoothly as Photoshop in my opinion, and although it’s not a complete replacement for Adobes Big PS – for my application it fits the bill perfectly.

Of course, it handles the other Picture Altering duties with ease too – cropping, resizing, colour & exposure adjustments etc, and granted, it doesn’t have the new features to be found on PSE 8, like the ability to remove people from the background of shots, stretch or squeeze pictures without distorting the main elements and auto-merge several images to get the best of each – but to be honest, that’s no where near as important to me as being able to use Layer Masks – so you  pay your money & you take your choice!

And then there’s the price – one of my Major Whinges with Adobe is their insistance on Gouging users outside the US for as much as they can, well Adobe, I’m afraid it’s going to lead to people abandoning you in droves. Yes, you’ll keep the big corporate players who can afford £2,500 on software without blanching, but you’re doing a great job of alienating the smaller ’semi-pro’ users – way to go!

So, Pixelmator will be replacing PSE 6.0 for Mac (and 8 too!) on my machines, and if you’re in the market for an alternative to the Behemoth that is Photoshop, you could do a lot worse than Pixelmator.

…And a Happy New Year !

Hope you all have a great 2010 ! (Twenty-Ten? Two Thousand & Ten? who cares, it’s going to be a good one :0)

Finally got caught up after the Festive Season, inc New Year, and assorted illnesses that the Children so kindly bought home from School & Childminders!

Want to get cracking on the ‘Start here…’ series for all the Christmas ‘New Mac’ Switchers out there, but you’ll have to wait until the Tax return is sorted – bane of the Self Employed here in the good old U of K. In the mean time, feel free to peruse the wealth of nuggets hidden away within the post on SwitchMac.com – hopefully they’ll save you some time & effort, and at the very least you’ll have a giggle at the glaring errors I made when I first Switched over!

Just needed an App to help with a problem I was having, and suffice to say, I found one! Gotta love the Mac Developers (& iPhone Devs too!) as no matter what you want to do, there seems to be at least one person out there who’s thought about it & produced a solution – more to come on that & a quick review too, I dare say – in a future post.

We wish you a Merry Switchmas…

new get a Mac ad

Ho Ho Ho !

Sorry, couldn’t resist that one :0)

(Apples new ‘Get a Mac’ Ad is out – click on the pic to go see it…)

Well, another year draws to a close, and Switchmac.com looks forward to it’s 2 year anniversary in January 2010, doesn’t seem like 2 years since I decided to make the Switch from PC to Mac – maybe that says something about how easy it’s been from the start.

In the New Year, I’ll be starting the ‘Start Here..’ series that will take people from unboxing their new Mac to choosing some 3rd Party Applications to perform the tasks did on their Windows machines, through to a look at Hardware & bringing that across platforms too.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for reading along and accompanying me on my journey from PC to Mac – it’s been a voyage of discovery in lots of ways, and a great deal of Fun (plus the odd moment of potential hair tearing!) – it’s been a joy & a privilege to have you all along.

More thanks goes to the Commenters – Thank You for taking the time to respond to my posts – I’m sure every blogger enjoys reading the comments, I know I do :0)

Hope you all have a great Christmas if you celebrate it, and some time with your Family & loved ones if you don’t, I’m off to wrap the last few presents for my children & enjoy some quality time with them.

See you on the other side ;0)

I can say 'I was there…'

Well, Saturday was a monumental day for the International Mac Podcast – they ran their marathon 12 hour Live Podcasting Session:

The IMP Live 12³ Podcast Marathon...

The IMP Live 12³ Podcast Marathon...

and I can say ‘ I was there…’ with pride. Ok, I wasn’t there for the whole 12 hours, or on with Ken Ray or Andy Ihnatko, Adam Christianson or Katie Floyd et al – not that I’m bitter ;0) – truth be told, I was only on for the Switchers Hour.

Which to be fair, IS the thing I should have been on for, and I nearly didn’t make that due to contracting a nasty 24 hour bug barely 24 hours before the Podcast started! But with careful application of Paracetemol / Ibuprofen & assorted fluids I made it, and what a great time I had.

I’m not going to run through the topics aired here – go take a listen to it on the IMP feed on iTunes or direct on the page at impdcast.tv (a click on the pic will take you there too)

Suffice it to say, we mentioned some good stuff for people thinking of making the Switch from PC to Mac. Windows 7 came up too, and has many have said, it IS quite Mac-like and I’ve used it myself in a Virtual Machine for Browser Testing web sites, and it performs quite well… but it’s just not OS X (sorry Microsoft!).

There’s loads of info on the Windows / OS X debate here on the site, and if you have a comment / opinion / rant you’d like to share, go click on the comment section at the bottom of the post – be great to hear from you!

OverHeard – “When you are ready to use your computer rather than fix it – THAT’S the time to Switch to Mac”

Back in the Saddle…

Well, not literally obviously, as I have a bit of a phobia about Horses – but I’m now able to devote some time to things other than making money!

(not much time admittedly! but something is better than nothing :0)

Right, where do we go from here then? Well I had an idea a while back to go back to basics for a series of posts / or a page taking someone from PC to Mac from 1st principles.

So I thought I’d ask you lot if that would be useful? Probably not for most of you, as I’m sure you’ve already made the journey – but maybe for a friend or relative who’s thinking about switching? – or one that you’d like to switch, as you’re fed up of providing ‘Unpaid Tech Support’ ?

Someone asked ‘when are you doing a Podcast then Rob?’ the other day! not sure it’ll happen just yet, but in case you’d be interested, it HAS been an idea floating around in my head for a while :0)

Do let me know what you think in the comments, and if you know someone who’s just switched or is about to switch, then please point them here – it might save them some hand-wringing & cursing!

Normal Service will be resumed…

Hi all,

just a quick line to let you know that Switchmac.com hasn’t vanished without trace.

My life has changed direction in the past few months, and that meant something had to give – and as Switchmac.com is not an income generator for me (I do it because I enjoy it :0) that was what I had to leave for a while.

Things are starting to settle down again now, so I’m going to stick my neck out and say ‘Normal Service will be resumed’ for Switchmac.com.

My first job will be to complete the review for iSale – both the Mac & iPhone versions.

Thanks for your patience, and I hope the rest of the content on the site has been of some help in the meantime.

First review underway

Well, I can now reveal the company who’s software & possibly hardware I’ll be reviewing for the site: it’s Equinux !

They have a range of useful Mac software and they also produce a USB TV dongle & associated software. They also have iPhone apps too, so this should give a good range of stuff for me to pick some ‘Switcher Oriented’ ones from.

Wasn’t sure what to choose for the first review, then life provided a solution (as it often does) in the form of some items I needed to put on ebay.

I know it’s not completely a Switcher oreintated subject, but I wanted to get a feel for Equinux’s products and also waned to give the first review software a good work out – so what better way to do that than use it to put some items on good old ebay! (and I’m sure a lot of Switchers will have ebay accounts too!)

In case you still don’t know, the software I’ll be reviewing first is iSale, the Auction software from Equinux. As luck would have it, Equinux also have a companion iPhone App for iSale, giving you the functionality to compile auctions on the iPhone and transfer them over to the App on your Mac for finalising & posting on ebay.

So, there’s your taster – I’ll be using the Apps over the next few days to post some items on ebay, and will report back on my findings. Should be interesting, seeing as it’s a ‘Real World’ test !

Reviews it is then!

Well, looks like a unanimous result in favour of reviews then! (going by the comments, anyhow)

I’ll be contacting the company who have offered to supply review copies/items to me and I’ll post more details of what I’ll be reviewing here once that’s finalised.

Rest assured it WILL be Switcher oriented though, I’m not straying from that part if the site too much :0)

Changes are afoot though, sobif you have any suggestions for information you’d like to see here – to help you out if you’re switching, or maybe someone you know who is thinking of switching – then drop me a line: rob@switchmac.com or leave a comment on this post.

Don’t know about you lot, but I’m pretty excited!

(p.s. posted this from my iPhone using the WordPress iPhone App, let’s you post, edit & approve comments wherever you are – and it’s free! v. useful if you have a word press blog)

Even let’s you take a picture and add it to the post from the iPhone! Or choose one from the pictures already taken…

Hardware & Software reviews…?

I have been talking to a company who have asked if I would like to review some of their hardware & software for the Mac – and I was quite flattered to be asked.

But seeing as Switchmac.com is for the benefit of YOU lot (not an Ego-massaging excercise for me) I thought I’d ask you for YOUR thoughts on the matter?

Would you like to see more Hardware & Software reviews as opposed to just my opinions and personal recommendations?

Feel free to leave a comment, and tell me your views – whatever your thoughts – I don’t censor the comments on the blog (unless they are inappropriate, rude, or of a racial nature)

Look forward to hearing your thoughts…

Before you switch – 5 things to help you determine if Switching is for you

Yes. I know. There are way more than 5 things to take in to consideration, but it wouldn’t have made you come and read it if I’d have called it ‘327 things to consider….’ would it?

Apple have a section aimed at Switchers too...

Apple have a section aimed at Switchers too...

So, seeing as ‘Lists’ seem to be the big thing at the moment, I thought if you can’t beat ‘em – join ‘em!

1. what do I use my computer for now?

2. do I want to tinker or use it?

3. is there a Windows Program I cannot live without?

4. is there a ‘crucial device’ I need to sync

5. will my existing devices work seamlessly?

Lets take them one at a time:

1. what do I use my computer for now?

Seems an obvious one, but it’s worth sitting down and listing out what you actually ‘do’ on your computer. I had quite a long list, seeing as I run a web design company, but your needs may be a lot simpler – or just as complex! Either way, it’s a great way of working out if it really IS worth taking the plunge.

Yep, you read that right – I’m not saying switching to Mac is for everyone. Some people could benefit by switching to something like Linux – lets take an example:

If all you use your computer for is email, surfing & writing the odd letter, then a switch to Linux would be relatively simple to achieve, as programs are freely available to do all those things, and if you have an older machine, you may see some performance increases too! (I’m not a Linux Expert, and if I’m talking rubbish here, feel free to put me right in the comments :0)

However, if you do all the above, and have an interest in taking & editing pictures or video footage and / or making music, then I wouldn’t hesitate recommending a Mac to you.

2. do I want to tinker or use it?

Might sound like an odd one, but some people love to upgrade their systems, and modify their cases etc – if this is you, again, I wouldn’t recommend a Mac straight off – there IS a large community based around modding Macs, but it tends to be older models in general, so maybe not the best place to start (and before you say, I know that a lot of people mod Mac Minis, and put them in all sorts of odd enclosures, but they ARE the exception to the rule, being so small)

Modern Intel Macs are getting easier to upgrade in terms of Hard Discs and RAM (well, RAM certainly) and the new MacBooks are a great example of this. But on the whole, I’d say this:

If you want to spend time modifying & streamlining your hardware & software (& killing viruses & Spyware) then a PC is fine – if you want to spend time USING your computer – you need a Mac.

3. is there a Windows Program I cannot live without?

This might seem like the deal-breaker, if you rely on a Windows Program daily or very frequently, it might make you think twice about switching.

The good news is you needn’t think that! There are lots of programs (usually called Applications or Apps) available for the Mac, and I would bet there is a developer somewhere who has produced a solution to your problems. (even quite specific ones: I needed to sync an HP iPaq PDA to Mac & then transfer the info off when I got my iPhone, and I found Apps for both needs :0)

Even if you can’t find anything (say you have a REALLY niche program, that the Windows Dev’s are not going to port to the Mac anytime soon) there is still a solution. You can run a Windows operating System on your Mac – or another OS, such a s Linux too – so you needn’t lose the ability to run that program. I won;t go in to the details here, that will be for a future post, or the ‘Start Here’ section I’ll be getting under way soon.

4. is there a ‘crucial device’ I need to sync

Again, you may think this one would be a stumbling block, but as I’ve mentioned, there are lots of Dev’s out there solving your problems for you – go Google your device & Apple Mac Sync, you’ll be surprised at the amount of solutions :0) – if the answer is ‘No, nothing available’ then again, time to take a step back and consider if you will be due to upgrade your phone / PDA anytime soon, I found myself in that position just as the 3G iPhone came out, so it wasn’t much of a decision for me!

5. will my existing devices work seamlessly?

I’d be very surprised if they didn’t! Most modern devices will come with Mac drivers (if required) and the Mac OS X Leopard has support for a huge number of devices built in – here’s another example from my experience:

I have an old Brother Mono Laser Printer which has served me well for years, and when I moved to Mac, I was a little concerned, as it only has a Parallel Port – No USB ! Well, I tracked down a Parallel to USB cable and connected it up. Went to the Add a Printer section of the System Preferences, and chose the closest model in the list for Brother Mono Lasers (they didn’t have the exact one listed) and saved the settings – and it worked seamlessly. I can tell you I was pretty impressed. The same thing on Windows would have taken a few visits to Google & several Driver sites too I daresay.

Same goes for things like Cameras, Video Cameras, External Hard Drives, Scanners… the list goes on.

I will say, if you are thinking of switching to Mac, it’s always worth checking compatibility with things like Video Cameras – some of the older models will have a slightly more complex method of transferring footage across, but most will still work, USB or FireWire! (Apple have a list for compatibility  that you can use to check for iMovie ‘08 – iMovie ‘09 has it’s own section, link on the page)

So there you go, some food for thought if you are considering Switching to Mac, and if after doing all the above you’re convinced, we’d love to welcome you aboard!
